Physicians, social workers and survivors of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, a form of cancer, on Friday stressed the need for ‘metal strength’ in fighting the disease, besides medical assistance.Taking part in a meeting of cancer survivors and physicians in the city’s Square Hospital auditorium, they said CML cancer, which affects mostly young people, can be fought with mental strength besides medication.
Bangladesh CML Support Group organised the event titled ‘Maximize Life’ with the tagline ‘You are Stronger than You Think’.CML cancer survivors shared their experience of successfully fighting the cancer at the programme.The CML Supporting Group chairman, Saifur Rahman Sohag, who is also a CML cancer survivor, said people affected by the cancer mentally broke down even at the primary stage, thinking ‘cancer has no answer’.‘But we have been surviving for decades through medication,’ he said. Shahriar Hasan Jewel, another survivor, said he was diagnosed in 2001 while still a graduate student and was now working for an international non-government organisation after completing his studies.

Poet and lawmaker Kazi Rosy, who has survived the cancer for 21 years, said families and the society should extend their helping hands to the cancer-affect so they have mental strength to fight it.Aparajita Society against Cancer’s chairperson Niloofar Tasnim said people should be united against contaminated food as it was a key reason behind the cancer.The CML Supporting Group chairman urged the government to develop facilities for cancer treatment in the country.He also asked pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh, who were producing and marketing medicines of cancer, to distribute the medicines freely among poor cancer-affected people.Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University professor of clinical hematology, ABM Yunus, said the university was going to introduce the treatment of CML cancer in two years.International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh’s head of laboratory operation management Anowar Hossain said the ICCDDR’B has modern facilities to diagnose cancer in their lab and people need not go abroad anymore for the purpose.
